¡  His tense syntax and tough eloquence were a reaction against conventional Elizabethan poetry

Metaphysical poets
¡  Donne is the most prominent member of metaphysical poets
¡  The metaphysical poet is a term coined by Samuel Johnson in 1781, following comment on Donne by Dryden
¡  Dryden wrote in 1693, “he affects the metaphysics.”
¡  In “Life of Cowley”(from Johnson’s 1781 work of biography and criticism, Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets)
¡  Johnson refers at the beginning of the seventeenth century in which “there appeared a race of writers that may be termed as the metaphysical poets.”

¡  The metaphysical poets are known for their ability to startle the reader and coax new perspective through paradoxical images, subtle argument inventive syntax and imagery from art, philosophy, and religion using an extended metaphor known as a conceit
